Access for All: Park and Recreation Introduces New All-terrain Wheelchairs
New all-terrain wheelchairs (ATWs) will soon be available to residents with disabilities that limit their access to greenways, trails and other outdoor environments.
Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation is making recreation more inclusive with the new ATWs, which are designed to safely navigate a wide range of terrains. Residents can reserve an ATW once a day, Monday through Friday, for up to three hours per day.
“Creating equitable access to recreation opportunities is one of our core commitments,” said Leslie Johnson, deputy County manager and interim director of Park and Recreation. “The new ATWs will help us ensure residents of all abilities are able enjoy our community’s most valued green spaces.”
Reservations are being accepted now, and the ATWs will be available for use beginning Monday, Nov. 18. Reservations can be made by phone or in person at five Park and Recreation facilities:
- Eastway Regional Recreation Center, 980-314-3772
- Northern Regional Recreation Center, 980-314-6772
- Quest at Latta Nature Preserve, 980-314-7878
