Mecklenburg County is home to more than 150,000 residents over the age of 60. It’s the fastest growing age group in the county. On Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2024, Mecklenburg County and its Age Friendly Mecklenburg initiative will celebrate Ageism Awareness Day. It’s a day nationally recognized by the American Society of Aging to draw attention to the existence and impact of ageism in society.

Age Friendly Fridays

In the spirit of Ageism Awareness Day and combating ageism in the community, Age-Friendly Mecklenburg and AARP invites residents to join a new monthly webinar series: Age-Friendly Fridays. The series begins this Friday, Oct. 11 and will continue every second Friday of the month.

As Mecklenburg County and the nation prepare to cast ballots in the 2024 election, this week’s Age-Friendly Friday event will focus on ageism awareness and voter registration. Early voting in North Carolina begins Oct. 17 with Election Day on Nov. 5. Participants in the webinar can connect with the Mecklenburg County Board of Elections and community resources to get answers to voter questions.

Community Survey

Age-Friendly Mecklenburg also wants input from residents of all ages on how to make Mecklenburg County a great place to live as they get older. Residents are invited to complete a community survey to help guide local efforts to make our communities more age friendly. Anyone who wishes to complete the survey by phone can call 980-314-6070.

Age-Friendly Mecklenburg is an initiative of Mecklenburg County’s Department of Child, Family, and Adult Services that works to facilitate the planning of not-for-profit, higher education, faith-based, private, and governmental organizations along with community residents to improve the quality of life for older adults.
