Apply to Join New Public Transit Advisory Committee
The Metropolitan Transit Commission (MTC) is seeking applicants for its new Public Transit Advisory Committee. Applications are due Jan. 3, 2025.
The committee provides advisory functions as directed by the MTC, which is the policy board for the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) and is responsible for reviewing and recommending all long-range public transportation plans. The new committee is also responsible for:
- Reviewing the CATS CEO’s proposed operating programs and five-year capital programs
- Reviewing transit policies
- Serving as an initial forum for suggestions and complaints concerning fares, routes and schedules
- Making recommendations to the MTC
The MTC established the committee, effective Jan. 1, 2025, through an interlocal agreement between Mecklenburg County, the City of Charlotte, and the towns of Cornelius, Davidson, Huntersville, Matthews, Mint Hill and Pineville.
The committee will meet on the second Wednesday of every month at 4 p.m. in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center. Members should expect a time commitment of approximately two to four hours per month. The committee will be composed of 15 members:
- One co-chair appointed by the chair of the Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners
- One co-chair appointed by the mayor of the City of Charlotte
- Two members appointed by the Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners
- Two members appointed by the Charlotte City Council
- One member appointed by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education
- Six members appointed by the towns (Cornelius, Davidson, Huntersville, Matthews, Mint Hill and Pineville with one appointment each)
- One at-large member appointed by the MTC who shall be a person with a disability
- One at-large member appointed by the MTC who shall be a fixed route service rider
To the extent possible, committee members should represent:
- Different geographic areas of Mecklenburg County
- Different incomes, races and ethnicities, abilities and disabilities, identities, and ages
- Different transit rider groups (persons with disabilities, senior- and school-age residents, commuters, low-income riders)
- Travelers of different modes of public transportation (e.g., local bus, express bus, light rail, microtransit, streetcar, and paratransit)
- Mecklenburg County residents with experience in urban transit issues who are interested in improving transit conditions within the county and region
- Transit-related organizations and clubs
- Schools, businesses, and neighborhood organizations that particularly depend on the city’s public transportation system
