Ahead of November’s countywide referendum on raising the sales tax by 1% for transportation projects, the Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners is scheduled to hear public input and vote on whether to authorize the formation of a Metropolitan Public Transportation Authority (MPTA). In addition to receiving comment and voting, the board will discuss the application and qualification process for interested residents.

The public hearing and vote are scheduled for the Board’s regular meeting:

Anyone interested in addressing the Board can sign up to speak or submit comments:

Special accommodations can be requested by contacting the Clerk’s Office at least 72 hours prior to the meeting.

If the Board authorizes the formation of the MPTA, residents interested in serving will be able to submit an application between Sept. 17 and Oct. 13, 2025. The Board approved the placement of the countywide referendum on the Nov. 4 ballot following the enactment of N.C. House Bill 948—aka the PAVE Act—which permits the local referendum. If the 1% increase in sales tax is approved by Mecklenburg County voters, the additional revenue would be dedicated to transportation projects, such as roads, rail, and buses. It would also create the new transportation authority comprising members of the community.
