Mecklenburg County children ages 5-12 years received free dental care as part of a national effort, called Give Kids A Smile Day, on Feb. 3. The County event offered comprehensive dental services including cleanings, exams, fillings, and sealants to 30 children.

“When we have this shared vision of oral health equity for all and learn how to transcend barriers, the rewards in the end far outweigh the challenges,” said Raydiance Swanston, Public Health manager of the Pediatric Dental Clinic.

The revamped event was brought back this year to much excitement and support from the Public Health staff.

“Community health here means one child at a time, and this was a great day. We are looking forward to increasing the capacity to serve the children who need it the most. County leaders just approved funding for a mobile dental van which will allow us to serve more children and meet them where they are throughout the County,” said Dr. Raynard Washington, Public Health director.

February is National Pediatric Dental Health Month. The American Dental Association partnered with 1,500 locations across the country to serve children. Learn more about pediatric dental services at Public Health.
