County Manager Dena R. Diorio Among Top 10 Inspiring Women Leaders of 2023
County Manager Dena R. Diorio has been named among the Top 10 Inspiring Women Leaders of 2023 by Industry Era for Women, a digital magazine featuring CEOs, C-suite executives, and other pioneers in various industries.
“I am honored by the recognition,” said Diorio. “I am proud of the work to serve the 1.1 million residents of Mecklenburg County.”
The County manager was noted for creating a culture of creativity and innovation as she leads a team of some 6,000 employees. As the first female manager for Mecklenburg County, Diorio acknowledged many advances and improvements in the leadership pool that guide both the private and public sectors of the community. However, there are still many meetings of decision-makers where she is the only female in the room.
“Women must see those occasions as an opportunity to shine. We must represent well and demonstrate a leadership style that is uniquely ours,” shared Diorio.
The recognition spotlighted Diorio’s leadership in developing and implementing the universal preschool program known as MECK Pre-K, a free, high-quality preschool for four-year-olds.
“Educators told us such a program could be transformational in the life of a child. I’m proud of our team and our leaders for making it happen,” said Diorio.
The County also implemented smaller-scale programs such as a paid internship for high school students.
“We realized for some students, earning money in the summer was a necessity. We wanted to make sure the opportunity to explore government pathways was an option for all students,” added Diorio.
Mecklenburg County has served as a model for other municipalities across the country that are looking to innovate their service delivery.
“We lean on our partners to help advance key initiatives such as expanding affordable housing, behavioral health services, and more,” shares Diorio. “Working with partners allows the County to leverage resources and help more people.”
Since being appointed in 2014, Diorio has focused on improving the County’s relevancy.
“Mecklenburg County must always have a seat at the table when the important conversations are taking place, said Diorio. “That requires being accessible, approachable, and being a problem solver.”
