Deadline Approaching for Solarize Charlotte-Mecklenburg
Community members have until Friday, Nov. 28, to sign up for a custom proposal to see how they can save with solar energy through the Solarize Charlotte-Mecklenburg campaign.
Solarize Charlotte-Mecklenburg aims to make solar energy more affordable through group purchasing, and more accessible with predetermined, highly vetted materials, pricing and contractors selected through a competitive bid process. The campaign also prioritizes community engagement and promotes solar-positive policies.
Since launching in June, nearly 300 residents have signed up to get a free system proposal through the campaign. Due to changing market conditions since the launch, community members can also enjoy lower pricing; all residential solar energy systems sized over 5kW are now $1.95 per watt. The price for a Tesla PowerWall3 battery system has also reduced from $14,500 to $14,000.
Participants who entered into contracts to purchase solar have combined to buy more than 275 kW in system power, which equals over 573,000 pounds of CO2 avoided annually. Batteries have also been selected by each of these homeowners to supplement their new systems and take advantage of rebates available through the Duke Energy PowerPair program. A total of 418.5 kWh in new battery storage has been added through the campaign.
The deadline for all residential contracts to be signed is Dec. 31. The commercial contract deadline is March 31, 2026. Installations by the selected provider, Renu Energy Solutions, are anticipated to continue beyond the outreach period with the goal of all installations complete on or before April 15, 2026.
