Less Than Two Weeks Left to Apply for Economic Assistance Grants

The deadline for homeowners to apply for economic assistance grant funding through the Helping Out Mecklenburg homeowners with Economic Support program (HOMES) is quickly approaching.

Homeowners have until Nov. 21 to apply for the program, which provides grants of up to $650. Qualifying residents in the Town of Davidson could get an additional grant up to $534.

The HOMES program has already received close to 9,000 applications, with more than $2.6 million in grant funding to homeowners being awarded since the program opened this year on July 1. The average award is $525. 

“Filling out a simple application could save you hundreds of dollars,” said Community Services Manager Shakirah Francis. “I encourage residents to look at the qualifications to see if they are eligible – you may be surprised you qualify.”

Mecklenburg County homeowners who may qualify for a HOMES grant have lived in their home for at least the last three years, meet a qualifying total household income level, and have no more than one delinquent tax bill in the last three years. There is no age requirement, the home does not have to be paid off, and applicants whose mortgage company pays their taxes (escrow) may still be eligible for the program. Applicants do not need to be on public assistance to qualify.

Applications are processed on a first-come, first-served basis until funds are exhausted. New applicants and previous grant recipients are encouraged to complete and submit the easy, one-page application online, by email, or by mail. The application can be found at MeckNC.gov/4HOMES.
