Little School, Big Impact: Huntersville Rosenwald School #2 Celebrates 100-year Anniversary

On Saturday, Sept. 20, Mecklenburg County will join with community partners to celebrate the 100-year anniversary of Huntersville Rosenwald School #2.
As one of the County’s six remaining Rosenwald Schools, this historic building was an integral part of educating African American students at a time when educational options were limited and inadequate.
Huntersville Rosenwald School #2, affectionately known as the “Little School,” is where rural African American students had a chance to change their futures. The building operated as a four-room schoolhouse from 1925 to 1958, educating first through fourth-grade students from the predominately African American community of Pottstown and surrounding neighborhoods. It served not only as an educational institution, but also as a public gathering place.
Upon its closure, Huntersville Rosenwald School #2 was purchased by the Huntersville Better Community Civic Organization and converted into a community center, hosting church events, weddings, and community activities. Today, the renovated building continues to serve as a gathering space and focal point for the African American community in northern Mecklenburg County.
The anniversary celebration will feature:
- Alumni sharing memories and memorabilia from their time at Huntersville Rosenwald School #2 and Torrence-Lytle High School
- A panel of Little School alumni discussing their experiences at the Rosenwald School and Andrew Feiler's Rosenwald history, A Better Life for
- Their Children
- A preview of the upcoming documentary, Pottstown USA
Unveiling of a commemorative historical marker

Festivities will take place at 508 Dellwood Drive in Huntersville beginning at 1 p.m.
