Mecklenburg County Chosen for National Program to Develop Affordable Housing

Mecklenburg County has been chosen for the second cohort of Counties for Housing Solutions (C4HS), a program from the National Association of Counties (NACo) and Smart Growth America that focuses on increasing housing supply.
Over the course of 12 weeks, the Mecklenburg County team will work through a step-by-step scenario for developing affordable housing. They will walk through the process of identifying and evaluating appropriate sites, planning community engagement sessions, partnering with potential developers, and seeking financing to support planned housing development.
Mecklenburg County is one of seven counties across the country chosen for the spring cohort, which runs through June. The team comprises staff from the County Manager’s Office and Asset and Facility Management, and will include Mecklenburg County Commissioner George Dunlap.
“Finding and sustaining affordable housing is one of the most challenging issues in our community,” said Dunlap, who serves as NACo Second Vice President. “I am confident our participation in this cohort will ultimately result in a much-needed, excellent and affordable housing project for Mecklenburg County.”
Participation in this program is just one of Mecklenburg County’s many efforts to address the high demand for affordable housing.
