Mecklenburg County to Co-Host Opioid Conference: Bringing Collaboration and Care to the Opioid Crisis

As the opioid crisis continues in communities across the country, Mecklenburg County leaders are creating a comprehensive gathering designed to address the multifaceted challenges of the crisis.

“Mecklenburg County plays a critical role in helping those struggling with opioid use,” said Criminal Justice Services Director Sonya L. Harper. “From re-entry programs to recovery court, we are on the front lines of the opioid epidemic and are looking forward to more opportunities to collaborate with partners and the community. We’re excited to support the Substance Use Disorder Task Force in bringing this important event to our community.”

Breaking Barriers: Compassionate Care and Community Engagement in the Opioid Crisis Conference will be an all-day event with goals to encourage active participation and collaboration. It’s also designed to improve the coordination of care as well as address gaps in care. The conference is scheduled for Monday, Sept. 15, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Charlotte Convention Center, 501 S. College St.

As a key feature of the conference, Mecklenburg County will present up-to-date data on the Opioid Settlement work and spending plan, now in its fourth year of funding. Leaders will share how much of the settlement dollars have been spent and how many people the work has helped. There will also be updates in the areas of evidence-based addiction treatment, employment-related services, early intervention, recovery support services, and recovery housing support.

“We continue to see the opioid epidemic impact every group in our community,” said Dr. Raynard Washington, Mecklenburg County Public Health director. “While we’ve made progress, there’s still much work to be done to protect health and prevent further devastating impacts from opioids. No one does this work alone, and we appreciate all the partners as well as the community members for their commitment and dedication.”

The event will bring together public health leaders, justice advocates, behavioral health professionals and community members. Mecklenburg County partners and Substance Use Disorder Taskforce members will be onsite to support the event and attendees.

The occasion reinforces the County’s commitment to transparency, equity, and shared leadership in how settlement funds are invested. This conference is open to all members of the Mecklenburg County community who care about addressing the opioid crisis with compassion and collaboration. There will also be simulation exercises to provide hands-on learning experience.

The conference is free to Mecklenburg County residents. Registration is now open.
