Mecklenburg County Public Health Unveils New Lactation Pod at BOPlex

Mecklenburg County Public Health is unveiling a new Mamava Lactation Pod in partnership with the BOPlex. This pod supports mothers by offering a private, comfortable space for breastfeeding and pumping at all BOPlex events.

“We’re excited for this new partnership to support breastfeeding families attending BOPlex events,” said Public Health director Dr. Raynard Washington. “Offering safe spaces like this at public locations helps encourage breastfeeding, which we know gives babies a healthy start at life.”

The BOPlex includes the Bojangles Coliseum and Ovens Auditorium facilities, which are owned by the City of Charlotte and operated by the Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority (CRVA).

“At the CRVA, our commitment is to deliver memorable customer experiences that reflect the best of Charlotte’s hospitality,” said Bryan Miller, Vice President of Venues for the CRVA. “Every member of our team serves as an ambassador for our city, ensuring guests feel welcomed, cared for and valued. The addition of this new lactation pod is another way we’re living out that philosophy—by providing an authentic, personalized and thoughtful amenity that meets the needs of families and creates a more inclusive and memorable experience for everyone who attends our events.”

Breastfeeding offers several health benefits for babies by lowering their risk of asthma, obesity, type 1 diabetes, and sudden infant death syndrome. It also has benefits for moms by reducing their risk of breast and ovarian cancer, type 2 diabetes, and high blood pressure.

“Ensuring access to private breastfeeding spaces helps to keep parents, families and babies in our community healthy,” said assistant health director for population health Dr. Kimberly Scott. “Public Health is proud to partner with BOPlex and other grassroots community organizations to offer pods or make over other private spaces for breastfeeding or pumping.”
