Mental Health Show Series Back On After Hurricane
Stories of resilience are deeply personal, and they matter. There will be more such stories after Hurricane Helene. But all these stories can connect and help us. This Is My Brave CharMeck 2024 show series will use performing arts as a way to end the stigma around the struggles of mental illness, substance abuse and community violence.
“These stories of resiliency and hope will resonate with everyone,” said Ebony Rao, Mecklenburg County Public Health manager in charge of the shows. “These stories will help to heal both the person and the community.”
The lyrics to the This Is My Brave song poignantly share what it’s like to live with mental health struggles: I thought there was no way out. I used to be scared of the light. I was swallowed by doubt and forgotten what freedom was like. Because the pieces on the floor they don’t fit anymore because I’m changing. Whey they ask you who I am what I’ve done and where I’ve been, there’s one thing I want you to say. Tell them I’m brave, see it on my face. I am bigger than anything coming my way.

“We are so proud of our team for creating this opportunity for all of us,” said Dr. Raynard Washington, Mecklenburg County Public Health director. “These performers are our residents sharing their stories in hopes of helping others with mental health struggles.”
The community is invited to the This Is My Brave show series where residents share their stories through performing arts to end the stigma around mental illness, substance abuse, and community violence. There will be a resource fair before each show so attendees can access mental health support and wellness.
