Mecklenburg County’s Office of Strategy and Innovation manages strategic business planning work, leads operational and organizational performance management processes, and conducts annual evaluations. It is responsible for projects like the annual Employee Climate Survey, Community Survey, Community Pulse Report and the Annual Corporate Performance Report.

Griswold has served as deputy director of the office since 2022. He previously served as business manager for the Department of Human Resources, and as a management analyst.

“Throughout his career, Michael has been a results-driven professional providing strategic guidance, data analysis and reporting, research, and evaluation,” said County Manager Dena R. Diorio. “He has a steadfast commitment to performance excellence, customer service, and fostering positive culture and teamwork. Michael’s values, integrity, work ethic and professionalism are core attributes that have stood out for more than a decade with Mecklenburg County.”

Griswold holds a bachelor’s degree from Clemson University and a Master of Public Administration from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He has undertaken additional trainings and certifications through the UNC School of Government, University of Maryland, and Central Piedmont Community College. He has participated in Leadership Charlotte’s Leaders Under 40 program and is a certified change management practitioner.

“Innovation within government isn’t about disruption for its own sake—it’s about designing smarter systems that solve problems,” said Griswold. “It’s developing strategies to help all Mecklenburg County departments and staff better serve our residents, especially those who are most vulnerable. I’m looking forward to this incredible opportunity to focus on the Board of County Commissioners’ priorities and continue our work in making Mecklenburg County a great place to live, learn, work and recreate.”
