Pedestrian Bridge Increases Access to Community Resource and Rec Center

Mecklenburg County installed a pedestrian Skybridge on Feb. 8, a major step forward in the plan to connect the Eastway Regional Recreation Center and the Ella B. Scarborough Community Resource Center (EBS CRC).

On Sunday around 2 a.m., a crane lifted the 200-foot pedestrian bridge over the Blue Line railroad tracks and secured it onto two towers — one built at the recreation center and another at the community resource center.

The idea for a bridge is due in part to community engagement sessions, where residents expressed a desire to easily access both sites. The project was funded with money allocated from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA).

Eastway Regional Recreation Center, which opened in 2021, offers athletics, aquatics, community events, health and wellness activities, and educational programming. The EBS CRC, which opened in 2023, offers a central location for residents to find help with health and human services such as economic assistance, food stability, and healthcare.

The towers and bridge will continue to receive finishing touches, and lighting, elevators and security components will be installed. The project is expected to open for pedestrian use by the end of 2026.
