Public Comments Wanted for Voluntary House Elevation Project

Mecklenburg County is seeking comments from the public or any interested parties regarding a voluntary house elevation project along the 3000 block of Hansen Drive.

This will be a voluntary house elevation project that would be funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and North Carolina Emergency Management (NCEM) in the form of a Hazard Mitigation Grant.

The existing home and their supporting systems will be raised to the Community Flood Protection Elevation as a means of reducing future property damages due to flooding.

As part of the application process, FEMA is required by law to consider alternatives, and to provide a public notice of any proposed actions in or affecting floodplains or wetlands. These project alternatives include:

Alternative 1: No Action – This would continue to place the structure at a high risk of being affected by the floodplain. The subject property would remain susceptible to any future flooding events. The damages and risk of potential loss of life would continue to be a threat if no action is taken.

Alternative 2: Elevation – A second alternative would be to acquire the stricture. This program is voluntary and the applicant did not want to abandon their home or neighborhood. Furthermore, acquisition would not meet cost/benefit requirement given land values in this neighborhood. For this homeowner, elevation is the best alternative.

Comments regarding the project can be made in writing and addressed to:
