Public Input Wanted on Home Energy Grant Program

The public is invited to offer comments on how federal Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) block grant funds are used.

LIHEAP provides heating, crisis and weatherization assistance. Mecklenburg County’s Department of Community Resources typically operates this program from December to March. States are given broad latitude under block grant funding to design and operate their own programs, with certain restrictions.

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services is seeking public comments on the LIHEAP Block Grant Plan, which outlines how federal LIHEAP block grant funds will be spent in North Carolina in federal fiscal year 2025-2026. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Administration of Children and Families allowed North Carolina the option to clone the plan from last year and make updates.

The plan may be viewed online June 23-27, 2025.

A public hearing webinar will take place Monday, June 30, to go over the Block Grant Plan and address any questions, comments or concerns. Register for the public meeting.

Registrants will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar.

Comments will be accepted until 5 p.m. on Monday, June 30. Comments can be emailed to Jasmyne Simmons at [email protected] and Emma Burgy at [email protected]
