Residential Pools for Short Term Rentals Now Allowed in Mecklenburg County

Mecklenburg County Public Health is helping residents stay safe as a new state law now allows the rental of residential swimming pools through a sharing economy platform without a public swimming pool permit from Public Health. The law (G.S. 130A-280) went into effect on July 1.
There are six recommended safety standards that must be followed by the homeowner to qualify as a residential rental pool. These include:
- Testing and maintaining water chemical levels.
- Keeping the pool area safe with proper signage.
- Having proper life-saving equipment such as reaching poles and life rings.
- Protecting and securing the pool with fencing and barriers to prevent unsupervised access.
- Having properly fitted submerged suction covers.
- Having a pool deck area with nonslip surfaces.
Public Health is not responsible for enforcing the above safety recommendations. Public Health continues to permit and evaluate public swimming pools in Mecklenburg County to ensure health and safety for residents. Residential pool owners need to comply with the state law in order to be exempt from a public pool permit.
