Following the enactment of N.C. House Bill 948—aka the PAVE Act—the Board of County Commissioners has begun the process that will place a countywide referendum on the November ballot.

To share information and educate all Mecklenburg County residents about transportation issues and the proposed referendum, Commissioner Vilma D. Leake (District 2) is hosting two community meetings:

Steele Creek AME Zion Church

West Charlotte Recreation Center

The community meetings will feature presentations from Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) and include information on services, plans to expand transit in the region, and the proposed 1-cent sales tax referendum.

A special meeting of the Board of County Commissioners is scheduled for July 30 for the Board to consider the language for the referendum. The Board has also given notice of a public hearing at its Aug. 6 regular meeting, where residents can speak on the referendum after which Board members will vote on whether to place it on the ballot. If approved, the funding stream produced by the 1-cent sales tax will be spent on Mecklenburg County transportation projects, such as roads, rail, and buses.
