Scam Jam: Educating Senior Citizens on Schemes, Scams and Fraud

Scams cost seniors more than $3 billion a year nationally, and Mecklenburg County residents are not immune.
That is why Mecklenburg County is hosting its “Scam Jam,” to educate seniors on spotting the red flags of a scam or fraudulent activity, and how to report fraud. There is no cost to attend and lunch will be provided.
Scam Jam will be held:

- 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Speakers at Scam Jam will include representatives from the U.S. Department of Justice, N.C. Department of Justice, N.C. Department of Insurance, the N.C. Secretary of State’s Office, Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department, Legal Aid of North Carolina, and the Charlotte Center for Legal Advocacy.

May is “Older Americans Month,” where Mecklenburg County residents are urged to celebrate older citizens, create an inclusive society, and accept the challenge of flexible thinking around aging. More than 150,000 Mecklenburg County residents are age 60 and older, and the number is growing. Age Friendly Mecklenburg facilitates the collective planning of not-for-profit, higher education, faith-based, private, and governmental organizations along with community residents to improve the quality of life for older adults. Scam Jam is hosted by the Mecklenburg County Department of Child, Family and Adult Services, Services for Adults division.
