On Aug. 8, Gov. Roy Cooper appointed Mecklenburg County Intergovernmental Affairs Manager Starla Tanner to the North Carolina Human Resources Commission.

The State Human Resources Commission was established in 1965 to be an HR administration system for state government employees, based on accepted principles and best practices and changes in government and industry. The governor and the General Assembly appoint the commission's nine members to four-year terms.

As the intergovernmental affairs manager for Mecklenburg County, Tanner is responsible for managing the legislative strategy, regulatory engagement and intergovernmental policy priorities at the state and federal levels. She has 25 years of experience in government relations and policy, including work at the leadership and cabinet levels of the North Carolina departments of Insurance, Health and Human Services, and State Treasurer, and for North Carolina Central University. She has worked in the Mecklenburg County Manager’s Office since 2017.
