The deadline is quickly approaching for homeowners to apply for economic assistance grant funding through the Helping Out Mecklenburg homeowners with Economic Support program (HOMES).

Homeowners have until Nov. 22 to apply for the program, which provides grants of up to $648. Residents within Charlotte city limits may receive additional grant funding of up to $367. That would be a maximum total award of $1,015. Qualifying residents in the Town of Davidson could get an additional grant up to $566, for a maximum total award of $1,214.

The HOMES program has already received more than 6,300 applications, with more than $3 million in grant funding to homeowners being awarded since the program opened this year on July 1. The average award is $514.

Mecklenburg County homeowners who may qualify for a HOMES grant must have lived in their home for at least the last three years, meet a qualifying total household income level, and have no more than one delinquent tax bill in the last three years. There is no age requirement, the home does not have to be paid off, and applicants whose mortgage company pays their taxes (escrow) may still be eligible for the program.
