Veterans Benefits Live: Three-Day Open House to Offer In-Person Support to Vets

Veterans and their families from Mecklenburg County and across the region will have an opportunity to ask questions and get answers about their benefits, plus learn about other valuable services. 

Mecklenburg County Veterans Services and other partners are sponsoring Veterans Benefits Live: VA in My Town: Mecklenburg County. The three-day, single-stop open house will help veterans and their families or caregivers navigate the many services available to them. Representatives from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and other partners will help attendees one-on-one with their benefits, claims, appeals and other concerns.  

When: 

  • Thursday, Aug. 22, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. 
  • Friday, Aug. 23, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. 
  • Saturday, Aug. 24, 9 a.m. to  2 p.m. 

Where: Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, 3400 Beatties Ford Road, Charlotte, N.C. 28216 

With one stop, veterans and their dependents can receive services, including: 

  • Veterans benefits (on-site claims assistance) 
  • VA healthcare (eligibility and enrollment) 
  • Legal assistance 
  • Mental health and substance abuse screenings 
  • Counseling services 
  • Employment, education, housing, insurance services, etc. 
  • Peer-to-peer connection 

Veterans and their dependents should bring their DD214, medical and service records, and dependency documents. Registration for the free event is requested, but not required. 

North Carolina was the first state to begin hosting events of this type, in partnership with the VA and the American Legion. In past years, veterans have traveled from across the state and the country to attend and receive services. Mecklenburg County is home to more than 50,000 veterans. There are 140,000 veterans in the Charlotte metropolitan area, the largest concentration in North Carolina. In fiscal year 2023, Veterans Affairs spent nearly $700 million to benefit Mecklenburg County veterans, including $413 million in direct payments to veterans.
