The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Emergency Management Office, Mecklenburg County, the City of Charlotte, and the American Red Cross are activating a winter storm shelter in response to forecasted extreme winter weather and the state of emergency declared across the county. The storm may result in a significant accumulation of ice and freezing rain in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg region, which may lead to widespread power loss or damage.

The shelter is located at Mecklenburg County’s Grady Cole Center, 310 North Kings Drive, Charlotte, NC 28204. It will open at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 24. Parking is available off North Kings Drive, between East 7th Street and Armory Drive.

The winter storm shelter is open to anyone in the general population who needs a warm, safe place to go. It is intended to serve families who fear losing power and have infants or young children, and seniors or anyone with medical needs who a require a temperate environment and access to power.

The American Red Cross is leading operations for the shelter, which will have heat and power and provide basic meals to residents. Mecklenburg County Public Health nurses will be available to conduct screenings and assist residents. The Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office and Mecklenburg County security services will provide security for residents and staff.

Transportation: Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) buses will offer rides to the shelter during this period and as weather conditions permit for safety. Riders must simply identify the location at the Grady Cole Center to the driver.

Anyone who plans to visit the shelter should bring the following items if possible:
