Winter Storm Shelter at Grady Cole Center to Deactivate on Tuesday, Jan. 27
The winter storm shelter at Mecklenburg County’s Grady Cole Center, 310 North Kings Drive, Charlotte, will deactivate on Tuesday, Jan. 27 at 11 a.m.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Emergency Management Office, Mecklenburg County, the City of Charlotte, and the American Red Cross worked together last week to activate the shelter in response to forecasted extreme weather and potential widespread power outages. With the winter storm dissipating and minimal power outages in the community as of Jan. 26, the shelter will close.
Residents who checked into the shelter during the period of extreme weather have been assessed for their needs and offered services. Mecklenburg County and its partners continue to work with Hearts for the Invisible Charlotte Coalition, Roof Above, Salvation Army Center of Hope, and My Sister’s House to support the needs of shelter occupants who are experiencing homelessness.
Anyone living unsheltered is encouraged to visit an alternate shelter if needed upon Tuesday’s deactivation of the winter storm shelter at Grady Cole Center:
For Men: Roof Above provides shelter for men at its shelter locations. Men may arrive at Roof Above at 3410
Statesville Avenue, Charlotte beginning at 12:30 p.m.
For Women and Families: The Salvation Army provides shelter for women and families at its shelter location. Women and families may arrive at the shelter at 534 Spratt Street, Charlotte between 4 p.m. – 7 p.m.
Hearts for the Invisible Charlotte Coalition will continue its outreach to homeless encampments to provide information on how to access shelter and services. Individuals declining shelter will be provided winter weather supplies, if needed.
